My Students

The library is the hub of our school. It is a place where students can experience technology they can't access otherwise because of their socioeconomic background, as well as a safe place for them to go to learn, relax, and read.

One of the best parts about my school is that we have such a diverse background of students.

My school is a Title I school that serves approximately 400 students. One hundred percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and some have no permanent home. Many might not come from a prosperous background, but they soak up every opportunity they have to learn, and this project will help the library gain materials that would reflect the diversity of the school.

My Project

My school has a very diverse population, but they don't always have access to books that have diverse characters that represent themselves. Having access to these materials is such an important aspect in education because research actually shows that being exposed to people that are different from us actually helps reduce stereotypes. Our students can't always be exposed to all the diverse groups in society, but they can be introduced to them through literature.

Every student should feel like they are important and deserve to to be able to choose books that has characters that represents themselves.

Having access to these books will give my students an opportunity to see themselves in the literature that they are reading and will encourage them to pick up a book to read because they will be able to relate to the material and learn how to cope with things they are dealing with in their own lives. It is so important for our students to see that diversity means so much. It includes not only different ethnicities, but it also includes various facets such as culture, gender, and social groups. Having access to books that approaches these topics will enrich my students' lives by bringing the world to them.
