Our school is a racially and culturally diverse school serving over seven hundred students in St. Paul, MN. Many of our students receive special services.
70% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
Almost 30% of our students are English Language Learners and about 10% of students receive Special Education services.
We are comprised of two separate schools with different programs: Montessori and Science. Students have many hands-on opportunities for learning through the Inquiry Zone, a hydroponics lab, an iPad initiative, and outdoor gardening areas. Our students are active, inquisitive children desperately in need of resources due to multiple years of school district budget cuts.
My Project
Comic books... graphic novels... whatever you want to call them, my students are CRAZY for them! The graphic novel section of our library is virtually bare because our supply cannot meet the constant demand.
Our district has had to cut school budgets the last 5 years in a row, which means the library gets very little funding to purchase new titles or replace damaged ones.
With all the usage, the graphic novels we own are breaking down. Students are also getting tired of choosing from the same titles. We need some new books to enrich the collection and to complete some of the series we already own.
My goals as a librarian is to help kids become lifelong readers. I want them to enjoy books and to find something each week that they are excited to read. Graphic novels meet this need and have many additional benefits including:
Motivating reluctant readers.
Supporting the needs of struggling readers and English language learners by helping them decode the text using images.
Increasing literacy skills such as inference, memory, sequencing, understanding succinct language, and reading comprehension.
Graphic novels are not just fun, they are a valuable reading tool. Help my students get reading!
