My Pre-K classroom is full of curious minds ready to learn! We are a diverse group and we learn from each other every day. For many of my students this is their first experience with school. It is important for me to teach them that school is a place where they are safe, and free to be themselves!
I teach at a STEAM academy and I am committed to teaching kids that dreaming, creating, and innovating are processes that are fun and important.
My Project
These books feature characters that look like my students! The central idea in the books selected for this project include community, kindness, acceptance, curiosity, and courage. These texts will help spark discussion about these topics with my students and will help to build a classroom community that focuses on these values. It is important to me that my group of diverse students be able to see themselves in literature that is found in our classroom.
If we as their teachers, parents, and communities are not actively pursuing a library representative of our diverse world and classrooms then we are lacking a thoughtful authenticity that could change and empower a student's life.
I cannot wait to see the excitement of another un-boxing where an even greater variety of kids can open books and say "That's like me!" or "That's what I'm going to do!" Many of my students have not held a book that accurately portrayed their appearance or upbringing. You can help to change that reality; positively impacting a student's life through books.
