Help me give my students literature that provides more mirrors than windows. Allow them to see themselves in these books, allow them to see their world, allow them to see current events and historical events...
Our class is full of 21 amazing students that are eager to learn about a host of subjects! They are enthusiastic, passionate, kind, and thoughtful. We are excited about learning challenges...especially those that we can read and write about! Many of our students ADORE reading so we are hoping to expand their non-fiction, social studies, STEM/STEAM, economic, science, current events, citizenship, social and emotional learning through new literary resources. Many of these new resources will reflect the diverse community of our students. We want them to see themselves in these literature pieces! We believe that with these new literature resources, students will be able to continue to grow socially, emotionally, and academically.
We would love to expand our classroom library to better meet the ever-growing needs of our student body. We feel as though providing more books that mirror what kids see in their lives, in themselves, in our communities will allow them to better connect. This year we have a major focus on improving reading and inspiring kids to see themselves as readers. We want to have all kids identifying as readers by the end of this year. With these new materials, kids will be able to connect in so many new ways. Through reading about science, technology, math, current events, historical knowledge, STEM/STEAM, arts, citizenship, social and emotional learning, and communities, students will be able to make much more meaningful connections!
