Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Frederick Douglas said, "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men." I've worked with "broken" teenagers and have seen the crucial need to build not only strong children so they can have a solid foundation when they get into those teenage years and beyond, but empathetic and kind leaders.
I currently work at a low-income, dual-language (Spanish/English) elementary school that has been labeled "high needs school." Although all of our students come from very little, they dream big!
The students at this school do not always come from supportive families, many come from broken homes, but they are loved and given the best teachers, staff and administration can give.
I service kindergarten through 5th grade and fortunately, this includes special needs students that give all other students an opportunity to be inclusive, use social skills, build relationships and foster kindness towards all. The school's focus is to build effective habits that lead to academic success, improved school culture and learned life skills. I believe that by providing strong mental health skills, I am helping build strong, empathetic children together with our school staff.
My Project
These children books will bring to life and open discussions to social emotional learning. It is one thing to talk to students about social emotional learning, but when they can visualize it through these books, they will better understand the concepts and have good examples of how to grow.
Students are able to relate to book characters in their own unique way.
They speak differently to different students and that is the magic books bring to counseling class. The students continue to talk about the stories and characters long after the lesson and I am able to remind them of a certain character and how he/she solved her issue(s).
I am constantly looking for stories that our students can relate to and these stories are beautifully told and illustrated in children's books.
