My students are some of the best in the world! They are eager to learn and light up with wonder when new concepts are shared.
GES is a Title 1 school in Southwest Virginia where 100 percent of the students receive free breakfast, lunch, and a choice of a third meal, which helps with hunger at home.
A large portion of our student receive "backpack buddies", weekend meals that go home with them each Friday. Even though a lot of my kids endure hardships at home, they come to school ready to learn and happy to be here where they feel loved and cared for daily.
My Project
Reading affects everything else that we choose to do in life! Being a good reader will help you succeed in all areas of school, as well as in life skills!
Realizing the importance of reading and knowing the hardships that my students endure daily with just having enough to eat, a warm place to sleep and someone who cares, our reading specialist decided to endeavor putting together a school literacy night to get our community involved with the importance of literacy, This has now turned into a Candy Land themed night called the "Sweet Land of Learning" and we are working together to encourage cross curricular learning in our school.
Our reading specialist works weekly to type up poems, or print paper books to send home with my students, so that they have something to read, but she really wants to be able to place a book in their hands on this special night encouraging their desire to learn, and in turn promote the importance of reading with their parents at home, which will have a positive affect on math and other areas of learning.
