Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
For those who love to read, a library is an oasis of words and images. Finding books that interest us should be easy and should have a sense of order. A book organizer will get our books out of awkward plastic tubs and into an inviting display. Help my students get the books they want into their hands.
Our students are second and third graders in a low income area where most students are on free and reduced lunch.
We are also a school composed of 84% English language learners, so meeting the California standards takes extra work and very targeted instruction. However, we the staff and our students are doing it with a lot of hard work! After many years of not meeting our goals, our school was restructured and we recently exited Program Improvement under No Child Left Behind. While we are proud of this, there is more to come and now we need supplies to get our students to the next level."
My Project
Our classroom library is starting to be worthy of the minds who inhabit our class. However, these wonderful books are crammed into a variety of plastic tubs. The library is cramped as we are limited with the old metal bookshelves the district has provided us. Our school is the oldest school in our district and the furniture reflects its age in its dull gray color. While I have tried to brighten this space with colorful stuffed animals and borders that state "I love to read," more is needed to make this place more inviting. This mobile book cart and the soft cushion seats will make the library a place to showcase the treasury of books I want my students to enjoy.

Students will have leveled books clearly displayed for them to choose their next adventure. They will see the importance of caring for their precious books and will take pride in the library we have created together.
