Our students in this area of Wisconsin are fun loving kiddos and are excited about learning. Our reading materials include many books on a variety of topics for reading at home and in school. We would like to expand our leveled book collection with books in a series so more of our students who are currently reluctant readers, may become engrossed in a type of book and want to read more of the same. Small group instruction with these new books would be fun for the kids. Helping all students be successful in reading is the goal of our teachers.
The students love to have books they can relate to and are wanting to become readers themselves.
Having many titles about similar topics provides the opportunities for kids to see themselves as readers. It is with this intention we are wanting to help more of students have a better grasp on the enjoyment reading can bring.
My Project
For most younger readers, the enjoyment of reading doesn't happen until students are able to read fluently. When students can use books in a series, they can concentrate on the story happening as opposed to having to decode all new words. Books in a series have the same characters, the same storyline and often times similar endings.
Both series chosen are chosen specifically for these reasons.
In one series the characters are 1st or 2nd grade students and the adventures the scout troop has. In the second series, the main character is a grandfatherly gentleman with a cat and includes all their new discoveries. Utilizing series books during guided reading groups will allow for students to be able to enjoy their reading, generate excitement and read more from home during our at home learning.
