Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come excited to learn in two languages, as part of our Spanish Immersion Program that was adopted more than ten years ago to meet the need of our cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Seven years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.
I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic background.
More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning in English and Spanish from K to 12. Close to 25% of my students' first language is English, and 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% speak another language. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bicultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.
My Project
My students fall in love with reading in kindergarten. For most of them, our kindergarten classroom library is the first place where they get access to books they want to read over and over. They get to discover new characters, authors, and genres throughout the year.
It is critical to have as many books available for my students to access throughout the day and year.
With these four bookshelves, I can place all of my content and picture books at students' reach. They could easily get a book tub or individual book during private reading, partner reading or choice time. It will eliminate the need for me to rotate books throughout the year due to a lack of bookshelves. The student would not have to wait for me to get some of their favorite books out or down.
These bookshelves are made of metal; they are strong and will provide plenty of space to place books tubs and individual books. My students to have access to all the library books in one place, they can even help come up with categories for books organization and create tub labels for some of them.
My students will no longer have to wait for the science unit about the organism or our social studies unit about holidays to read books about these topics, they will be all out, read to be discovered!
