My students come from a blue collar working class community, where family, friends, and community are everything. The resilience in our town and surrounding towns is palpable, and I truly believe it comes from the souls of our youth.
Many of my students have grown up together and are integral parts of each other's learning experiences.
They are hungry to learn, excited to grow, and ready for challenge together.
My Project
Book Clubs within the classroom are a great way to boost student engagement and maintain the integrity of student choice. I've carefully selected these texts from a variety of authors of different backgrounds so students can have access to worlds outside of their own.
I plan to use these books in our literature circles, where cooperative learning thrives.
Students help each other understand a text and make sense of it. I plan to model, guide, and support the lit circles in any way I can, and it starts with the purchasing of these books.
Most importantly, I want my students to enjoy reading and work on social skills that may be a little rusty after quarantine and social distancing.
