My Pre-Kindergarten students love to be read to every day. I am trying to encourage my students to gain the confidence to "read" on their own. To build their confidence, I have enlisted my parents to read emergent story books to their child.
My parents have been told that exposure to storybook reading at a young age helps children gain the knowledge about written language long before they can conventionally read.
When a child listens to a favorite book over and over again they can eventually take the book into their own hands and read the story to an adult. Adults often call this memorizing, but what these children are really doing is falling in love with books, and learning about story language and story elements.
My Project
My students would follow the reading readiness steps needed to build their confidence in reading - predicting, reading, retelling and re-reading. This process would entail reading the same one story every day for one week. By repeatedly listening to the same book my students will become familiar with the storybook language, the characters, the plot and then be able read the book to themselves using all of those elements. As my students read and reread these favorite books, their confidence is growing in their reading ability.
In order to initiate this project I would like 43 copies of emergent storybooks so that students will have multiple opportunities to engage in reading different book. These books have a clear, engaging storyline, rich language, dialog and emotional content that the students can relate to.
You can help immerse my students in storybook reading and ensure their reading success.
It will give them something to look forward to reading each week. Thank you in advance for your thoughtfulness and generosity!
