My students need nonfiction books and graphic novels to be engaged in reading! Our titles include books form the series You Wouldn't Want to Be a..., The Babysitter Club, Big Nate and many more.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at an incredibly diverse school full of students at varying reading levels. I teach in a Reading Workshop format where students choose books that interest them that are at their independent reading levels. Part of the reason teens are often turned off to reading is because they are forced to read something they have no interest in and that may or may not be at their independent reading level. I try to foster the love of reading in my classroom by showing students that reading is enjoyable. If teens find reading enjoyable, they are more likely to do it, and the more they read, the better they get at it!
My Project
I am requesting two types of books: nonfiction books and graphic novels. Our titles include books form the series You Wouldn't Want to Be a..., The Babysitter Club, Big Nate and many more. Each winter, I teach a huge nonfiction unit. Students are often a bit uncertain about the nonfiction genre and many start by saying that this type of reading is "boring." Over the course of this unit, however, I hope to expose kids to nonfiction titles that will change their minds about nonfiction reading. By the end of the unit, they have not only become stronger readers of nonfiction texts, but they no longer view nonfiction as a boring genre!
My students naturally gravitate toward graphic novels, so I'm always in the pursuit of finding new graphic novels that will interest them.
I am therefore requesting graphic novels to add to my collection at school.
