My Students

Welcome to a centralized classroom for K-5th kiddos on the Autism Spectrum with significant behavioral and social deficits.

The primary focus of my classroom is to teach Social Skills and Emotional Regulation skills needed to increase independence and success in the general education classroom.

We spend 45 minutes, daily, learning various social, emotional, and behavioral skills. According to my students, it is their favorite part of the day... next to recess and lunch! All of my students LOVE to read!

My Project

The books listed in this project are going to contribute to an ever growing classroom library that focuses not only on leisure reading while addressing necessary comprehension skills, but also focuses on the behavioral, social, and emotional skills my students struggle with.

These books will complete a 60 book list for a curriculum we use while also providing books to begin a classroom of adapted books!

The social skills books will help drive the daily instruction provided to 14 students who have deficits with various skills. These skills need to be directly taught with various materials to help students learn the skills to increase their independence within the general education classroom. With the help of Autism Adventures Curriculum, my students are on their way to having books to match each of the designed skills.

The other books will help drive a project created by Mrs. Ds Corner where comprehension skills can be practiced in an independent work station with various "wh" questions and answers associated with multiple books.

My students love to have breaks throughout the day for positive behavior and various sensory needs. While a few years ago breaks would center around toys, there has been a slow and steady shift for breaks to center around books. The more books, the more reading. The more reading, the more knowledge!

Seeing my kiddos walk into the classroom when we have new books on display is one of the best feelings. I hope to continue providing new books for my current students and all the students who walk through my doors in the future!
