Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the feeling you would get as a kid when you found yourself lost in a great book suddenly thrown into a magical world? I want to help my students develop a love of reading by discovering a plethora of great young adult books and authors.
I teach a reading class for a diverse group of students in a high poverty school.
My classes are predominantly comprised of African American, Hispanic, Special Education, and ESOL students who struggle to acquire the reading skills necessary for students their ages. While they are often labeled as non-readers, they merely struggle to access many middle school texts and are sometimes unmotivated by novels that do not appeal to them.
My Project
I want to shake things up and provide my reluctant readers with books that will inspire them to not only have stronger reading skills but to be life-long readers. We need new books for our classroom library. Our list includes Astronaut Academy, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dork Diaries, The Dragon Players and more. Students will be able to relate to the dynamic characters and learn from the themes throughout the novels. By having a choice of so many different types of books during independent reading time, they will be motivated to select one that's right for them and have book talks with others as they discover new titles.
Do you remember a novel that inspired you or made you want to read more?
Do you remember the excitement you felt at the smell and feel of a brand-new book? I believe these books could open up new worlds for my students. Please support this project to provide the gift of reading and help my students find that true passion for books we want all young people to have!
