My 8th grade Lit and Language Arts students are diverse, energetic and enthusiastic about learning. Most of all, they love to read and be creative! My students consistently read on average over 20 books independently during the year. Students have about 20 minutes daily to read in class and are expected to read for 30 minutes every night. They are encouraged to challenge themselves and to read a variety of genres. They participate in book clubs, give weekly book talks, and continue to surprise me with their love for reading by always asking me, "Can we have more time to just read?"
In this class, we do some amazing things: expand our thinking, broaden our horizons, and make our heads explode with new and interesting information.
We study novels, short stories, articles, interviews, poems, art, advertising, podcasts, song lyrics, and historical documents. We analyze how these relate to our lives and how it connects to other important texts and issues. On top of that, we study grammar and enhance our vocabulary, as well as our writing and speaking skills. Most importantly, we focus on becoming independent thinkers while also focusing on working with others.
My Project
Students need the right materials to start off the year on a good foot--that includes good books, comfy seating, and classroom supplies. Providing students an environment that is reading friendly, is one of the ways to help them become life-long readers, which is my goal. Can you imagine sitting in a hard desk for 70 minutes trying to read a good book?
I need furniture and areas that are comfortable and inviting to 8th grade students and will allow them to get in the "reading zone" for as long as possible with some new and engaging books.
My students have reading workshop for 70 minutes everyday! I want my students reading, and I want them reading a lot. I am asking for a comfortable, saucer chair and a rug to soften up my tile floor in the reading area. I'm asking for a few new books to add to my classroom library and some supplies that we will use all year. I have a good start, but after the end of a great school year and lots of use, my classroom needs some TLC!
Your help will ensure that my students have a comfortable, inviting place to get lost in a great book and supplies to use throughout the year. This is where they will expand their minds, build background knowledge, and start becoming life-long readers. What more could you ask for?
