This is my third year as a middle school Special Education teacher in a low income area. My students are happy kids who are always willing to learn but who can become discouraged and frustrated easily. I want to have a classroom where they feel safe, supported, and loved so the only thing they need to focus on is their learning.
Despite so many hardships and their disabilities, my students are eager to learn and are ready to do their best.
My students come from diverse backgrounds and often have difficult life situations. I want to give them the tools they need to make them successful.
What I enjoy most is seeing my students get comfortable and feeling confident about their skills and the subject area. When it comes to reading, all my students read below their grade levels and so when I bring up reading it's like pulling teeth. I want my students to listen to the amazing stories found in these books, see characters that look like them, and feel intrigued and proud. I want my students to learn to love books, continue to want to better their reading, and find the value in the lessons the books hold.
Books with diverse main characters can help change the experience my students have about stories and books.
I know what it means for my students of color to be able to read books that have characters that look like them. To acknowledge that others have lived similar challenges and the best thing yet, to find out the importance of our voice, embrace our differences, and celebrate all values and beliefs.
