Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a school on the far northeast side of Chicago where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Due to the lack of funding, I am not able to buy any new books for my 6th grade Language Arts classroom. We are trying to improve test scores and prepare for the new Common Core assessments, but we do not have the resources we need. Our students are wonderful and work extremely hard. They often comment on our lack of quality reading materials, and it is easy to see their disappointment. As I add more high interest books to our library I'm finding my high level readers are complaining they don't have anything to read
Our classroom library needs more age appropriate high level books.
Imagine being in 6th grade and having a high reading level, but all books at a high reading level aren't appropriate for you to read! We need more choice of high interest high level books in our classroom library. Students are expected to read at school and at home, but there is never enough books in our library!
My Project
These books are books for kids who are at the reading level of young adult but are not old enough to read about some things in the young adult books. My students are only in 6th grade and not ready to read the young adult content that many of the high level books contain. My high students are already starting to complain about the lack of high level books in our classroom library. They have already read the ones I have. As a former 7th and 8th grade teacher, I had to remove many of my higher level books when I moved down to 6th grade. It's time to replenish those books!
