I work at a school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. These students don't have the same resources as their peers coming from higher income families. Some of these students experience the chaos and instability of homelessness.
Due to the extreme poverty and instability my students experience, they and their families have to deal with, many times my students lack materials for school.
These students don’t have the opportunity to have as many hands on experiences as their higher socio-economic peers.
My Project
Most of my students do not have access to books at home, not to mention books on their reading level. It is imperative to literacy development for students to practice reading to others. Without access to books within their reading level, they won’t have the opportunity to practice reading at home and for fun. Reading for fun and feeling proud about reading encourages literacy. These books will be available for the students to read during school, but also for them to take home daily and read to their families. The books are on a range of levels in order to meet each child’s need.
Many of the students in my school are experiencing homelessness.
These students don’t have access to books at home. This project would give these students a chance to bring books home to read to their families and expand their literacy skills.
