Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my school tend to do well on the state exams, yet do poorly on college placement exams. We need to bridge the gap for college readiness.
While our students come from diverse backgrounds, nearly all tend to struggle with their writing.
They have the ambition to go to college, but don't seem to understand the quality of work they have to demonstrate at that level. They don't realize the amount of writing that will be needed regardless of the area of study. Many of the students will be the first in their families to go to college. Many are first generation American and have ESL issues. Additionally, they don't have the financial ability to seek help outside of the classroom. They need to improve their writing abilities if they want to succeed in higher level education.
My Project
Students will have the opportunity to take a writing and research class that will benefit them in their first year of college. They will be challenged to discover ideas that sparked an interest in them, and they will research and write about those ideas. They will learn what a credible source is, new ways to organize their ideas, appropriate lead-ins and transitions to ideas, and a strong base in writing conventions. These two requested books, "They Say / I Say": The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing, and The Craft of Research, will work as reference material to help students with proper structure, more sophisticated lead-ins to textual evidence, and samples of well done work. The books will help guide students through the writing process.
This is a new class that will be offered next September to college bound seniors.
For the students to be most successful, they need to be given texts that will aid them in properly researching and writing ideas.
