My Students
My students are from a diverse, Chicago neighborhood brimming with English language learners, attending a public school. A variety of cultures are represented, languages spoken, and ideas shared within my classroom. 90% of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
My daydreaming middle schoolers race to our classroom library to reunite with their favorite books and snag the coveted rocking chair and ottoman for independent reading.
They enjoy perusing the variety of reading options that I have carefully selected to nurture their love of reading. Just this morning, an eighth-grader told me the novel she was reading was so good she read it in two days and can’t wait to find another one that she only hopes can last even longer! Unfortunately, I find the boys in my room seem to have a harder time finding books that interest them which can make reading feel more like a chore. Through my project, I hope to change that!
My Project
This is my first full year teaching at my school and through the help of donors, I have been building a classroom library which is crucial because we do not have a school librarian. Research shows the best way to improve reading comprehension is to read more. Students will practice literacy skills in class during self-selected reading time and can check out books to bring home.
Boys are specifically in danger of being disengaged readers which can put them at a disadvantage across all subject areas.
This project is filled with carefully selected books to interest the male readers in my room. I have based the choices off of their personal requests and most searched for genres- specifically mysteries, science fiction, sports stories, graphic novels, and non-fiction.
