I teach 5th grade students on a reservation, who have amazing spirit. They have not been given the best chances in life, but make the most out of what they have been given. They have a desire to learn about the world and how it works. Basketball is a favorite pastime of students here.
Even though their lives have been hard, their hearts are big and full of love.
Some students still struggle with reading at even a 2nd grade level but keep pushing forward making gains. When we started the year, many students struggled to remember their multiplication facts. However, they are now able to do long division with ease. It's been amazing to watch their learning and confidence grow throughout the year.
My Project
My students do not have access to many interesting books. Our school library is very small and students often have trouble finding books of interest, causing many to give up on reading. These books will inspire a love of reading on their own. These books are at their level and full of wonder and adventure.
Some of the books, such as the Percy Jackson series, will be read aloud in class to spark their interest.
Our reading book includes snippets of longer books such as Old Yeller and Black Stallion. These books will give students the opportunity to continue reading the entire book when their interest is sparked.
