Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school provides a unique blend of culture and history to its scholars. This culture embodies their love of our Earth and their desire to find ways to make a powerful change in our school's ecology.
You will often find scholars tending to their gardens, feeding chickens and tilapia, and harnessing clean energy to manage these resources.
And, although we are a Title I school, scholars perform with the highest of expectations, integrity, and hope. Scholars know they are stewards of their earth.
My Project
Books become the source of pleasure, escape, and ultimately the are the givers of ideas and knowledge. The right books transport students to other lands, other worlds, and help them consider other streams of thoughts. They are essential for student growth, and play an important part in shaping a healthy world-view.
Providing time, space, and choice for children to read is my top priority.
All scholars will be given a 30-minute block of time a day to read independently their chosen book. These books are relevant and timeless for our diverse scholars. For example, the book by Aliki titled "Corn Is Maize: The Gift of the Indians" allows for scholars to see how the corn they grow at school has shaped and continues to shape our world. Additionally, books like "Niño Wrestles the World" by Yuyi Morales, is filled with rich Spanish words, and a child's imagination that explains the lucha libre culture. Some other requested titles include Chocolate Me!, Each Kindness, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, The Crossover, The Kite Runner, and Too Many Tamales.
