Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from many different backgrounds, but they ultimately want one thing - to love learning, and therefore love school. Many of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have little educational resources in their home lives.
All of my students are participating in the 40 Book Challenge to help them become better and lifelong readers.
Unfortunately, many do not love reading or school yet, and they need a lot of encouragement to help get them there! Having access to curriculum they enjoy will help them fall in love with reading and school.
My Project
My students are ALL participating in the 40 Book Challenge! This idea was brought to my attention after reading Donalyn Miller's The Book Whisperer, which discusses the need to abandon reading logs and whole class instruction on a single novel. To become readers, kids need to behave like real readers.
Kids will only grow to love reading by choosing their own awesome books to read!
No more reading logs and whole class reading the same boring book.
Kids need choice so they can read volumes of books to turn them all into readers! These books are some of the most popular titles in today's youth fiction and my students would love to have access to these books.
