This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Where are the good books?" is a question I hear frequently. This year my students have rediscovered the love of reading. The problem, however, is that our classroom library lacks enough novels to allow every student an opportunity to choose a book they actually like.
I teach seventh grade language arts in an urban middle school.
While many of my students read several years below grade level, they are the most dedicated and hard working students I have ever met. This year our class has decided to set a goal to grow two years in reading. My students have been working very hard in order to meet that goal. In less than eight months, most of my students have already grown two full years in reading! One of the things that has contributed to their success is their hard work and determination. Each week my students spend an additional two hours practicing independent reading outside of school. After all, practice does make perfect!
The problem we are currently facing is that we are running out of material to practice with. Unfortunately, our school has fallen on difficult times and does not have the financial capacity to provide our students with new books.
My Project
My students need 11 books such as The Zombie Chasers, Accomplice, The Lonely Hearts Club, and Sleepless to keep my teenage readers excited about reading. In order to meet our reading goals, my teenage students need books that they actually are excited to read. After all, when you are excited about what you're reading then it makes it more enjoyable. These books will enable my students to keep their momentum going and allow them to continue making reading growth this year.
