Help me give my students a class set of novels about a boy who learns to fly. This will supply them an engaging, grade-level text to study, and it will give them the inspiration to carry on.

My Students

Many of my students come from difficult backgrounds. Some of the students have parents who are incarcerated, and some of the students live with grandparents because their parents have lost custody or are deceased. One student, just yesterday, wrote an essay about the many months that him and his mother were homeless. These students need stories that can relate and amaze them, and, frankly, they have no class sets of any novel. They are only supplied 1 standard ELA textbook.

My Project

My students come from low socioeconomic conditions and have experienced the incarceration of parents, death of parents, and custody changes. They act out and deal with stress in a way that typical students do not. That is why they need actual books that they can connect with and be inspired by.

Funding this project will supply them with paperback editions of the book Mr. Vertigo by Paul Auster.

The book follows a young man who, with the help of a magician, learns to fly. Many of them need a message of encouragement such as this and need actual books to read from. Our school only supplies a standard ELA textbook.
