have you ever refused to come to school because you were terrified? This is the situation my students are currently in. They hold back in class in fear of being scrutinized by their peers. All of them are passionate readers. We just do not have any class set of books in our middle school.
My students are full of energy!
They belong to low-income families, receive free/reduced meals in school, and many are refugees. Yet, they are hungry to learn each day. They are quick to "push back" and are always ready to make connections using their personal experiences. Their biggest challenge is acceptance, understanding, and respecting each other's differences. Overall, my students are ambitious individuals whose energy, when channeled, can lead to true leadership.
My Project
I am requesting 30 copies of the book Night. This text is inspirational and the characters demonstrate determination against the odds. This allows students to form correlations between dictatorship and bullying. It will offer them a mental space to understand, analyze, and evaluate the causes and effects of bullying through constant text-self and text-world connections in relationship to World War II. It is an opportunity to tackle social justice issues of racism, silence, and equality. My students will reflect on their own prejudices through a cultural autobiography. The connections will be recorded through the use of sticky notes. Sticky notes will be how they will track their connections and misconceptions during reading. The bullying and World War II visual aids will be put into their re-reading activities. The World War II visuals assist with the historical context of the book.
Funding this project will make a huge difference in my students' lives!
They are willing to take risks. Reading this book, building an accepting culture, and constantly reflecting each day is amazing! Students will be challenged academically, emotionally, and personally each day. You have the key to help increase acceptance and stop bullying in our class.
