During the height of the Covid pandemic and remote/hybrid learning, we often wondered what the effects would be on our children. As a librarian in an elementary school, I see firsthand where we are after three years of disrupted learning. Our youngest students had abnormal PreK-2 years, and besides academic losses, we are seeing even more impact on their social-emotional capabilities and behavior. They need help taking turns, having patience, not interrupting, and even the simplest acts of practicing kindness.
I have a lot of classroom teachers asking if our library has picture books related to social-emotional learning that they can use for read-alouds and classroom discussions.
It is not something, with our limited budget, that we have focused on in the past. I find myself sadly having to tell them that we don't have such titles. Knowing that we are in for a few more years of our youngest students being impacted by Covid schooling, I would love to be able to develop a collection of social-emotional learning-based picture books specifically meant for teachers to borrow. Your donations can help make this possible.
