Today's students are absorbed in the fast-paced digital world of Internet blogging and text messaging. Their attention spans are shorter and among all of these distractions, their desire to read is pushed to the side. I teach 10th and 11th grade English and I am always disappointed when my students tell me that they hate to read. I feel that a part of the problem lies within the books that they have to choose from.
Not only are my students already distracted by the fast-paced digital world in which they are immersed, but the classroom I am currently in is a temporary classroom located in a gym. This classroom has no ceiling and the noise at times is unbearable. My students have free reading time every week and I not only have to struggle with the noise factor, but reluctant readers as well. Many of my students also do not have the funds to pay off their library fines and are unable to check out books from the school library. Many have expressed their desire to read, but simply don't have the means to buy a good book.
I am hoping to bring in some new books for my students that will spike their interest in reading and sustain their attention in the chaotic environment of our temporary classroom. The books I have chosen were on top lists for best teen novels and were recommended to engage reluctant readers.
My students struggle to focus in an environment that is already distracting, so placing a good book in their hands to bring excitement back to reading is a top priority of mine.
