Help me give my students books to read while they are at home during the COVID-19 lockdown. Students cannot access their school or community libraries, and we would love to send books to them!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a founding 5th grade teacher for the FIRST all-girl public charter school in Kansas City! We will serve girls from all around the Kansas City area. Kansas City is historically an under-resourced community for students of color and our school wants to ensure that all students are granted the opportunity to receive a quality education. We will have a diverse incoming 5th grade class. We will serve students of different races and ethnicities, and students who recently immigrated to the United States. We are excited to make our school where everyone feels welcome and all cultures are valued. We are committed to making a school FOR girls. A place where young women will feel valued, supported, and empowered.
We believe that education leads to freedom.
We want our students to have access to a rigorous education, while also developing their self-identity and voices. Education will allow our students with choices and the opportunity to be whoever and whatever they want. We are dedicated to providing an education for our girls where they will be able to use their knowledge to become leaders and change agents in their community and world.
My Project
Currently, our school is closed until April 24th because of COVID19, and there's no promise that we will open after that. Even though we are closed, our students are still incredibly invested in their learning. Students receive weekly packets and they are constantly calling their teachers to check their work and advocate for help.
Our scholars deserve to be able to continue their learning at home.
The lockdown has caused local libraries to close and our students can no longer access library books from school or their community. Our students are committed to their learning and would love to have access to books during this wild time and throughout the summer!
