Ms. Leija from Dallas TX is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Books for Novel Studies

My students need good and interesting chapter books to help them with comprehension. I have chosen books that I think will capture their interest and for us to start a novel study in our classroom.

My Students

My students are in a low social economic school with 100% of the campus receiving free breakfast and lunch. Most of my students' are bilingual, while only a few speak one language (Spanish). Students are mainly taught in their home language, as they learn to read and write in English on specific days throughout the week.

Our campus holds students from Pre-K to 5th grade and is located in the middle of a low economic and high crime neighborhood, but this does not stop them from attending school every day.

They are always happy to come to class, learn, and have fun.

My Project

I believe novel studies will help students get more excited about reading, help them with fluency, by doing shared reading, and keep them engaged in deep thinking.

Novel studies can also help students develop social skills.

Students will be able to discuss with one another about the characters' actions, situations, and/or challenges. They will able to agree and disagree with each other appropriately and share any personal experience, if any, related to the book. It will help them understand things or situations they may not have experienced with firsthand, for instance, August Pullman in the book Wonder. A great way to help develop empathy.
