Books for Low Income 1st Graders!

My students need leveled readers. We have a very limited amount of books at my school and many are not appropriate for 1st grade. These books are great for my students. We will use them daily.

My Students

Our school is a title 1 school meaning we have a high percentage of children from low-income families. We have students from many cultural backgrounds and live in an area of low socioeconomic status.

Many of our students eat breakfast lunch and dinner at school.

This is the reality of these kids' lives yet they walk in with a smile each and every day. They make me appreciate the little things and inspire me daily.

Many students in this population also experience childhood trauma and may need extra love and support from teachers. I am happy to give them that extra hug I can see they desperately need.

My Project

Reading is the most important thing we can do in 1st grade.

This is an age of extreme growth and where we will see a lot of progress.

My students need to read every single day yet many do not have any books at home. I need to maximize instructional time in class and have my kids read these books at their appropriate level.

When they read at their level they grow in confidence and learn to love reading. If books are too difficult they become frustrated and withdraw. We need just the right reading level to challenge them yet make them feel confident. These books are leveled A-E. I can assess every student and have them read their appropriate leveled book.
