My Students

I teach 10 6th grade students with Special Education needs. My students attend both small group and general education English Language Arts classes. My students face many struggles both in school and out. Many students come from low-income families. They do not have access to the same resources as their peers.

I want my students to become star readers despite their obstacles.

Although reading is a difficult skill, my students love checking out the classroom library and become very excited any time new books are brought in.

My Project

Studies show that students learn best when they have high interest materials and can discuss their experiences. I would like to run literature circles with my students, focusing on the themes of "exploration" and "imagination". The titles I have chosen are different than most of the books my students currently read. I want to open them up to classic children's literature and share many of the books I enjoyed as a student.

These books will allow students the experience of getting lost in a good book!

The variety of books will allow for great class discussions comparing and contrasting the experiences of the different characters, as well as the writing styles of the authors. Students will spend time reading aloud in class, having discussions with students who have chosen the same book, as well as large and small group discussions with mixed book-choices. Students will have the opportunity to share their knowledge the books through art and multimedia presentations.
