This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a kid, I loved to read, so much that I would be content doing that over just about any other activity. I want my students to have the same love of stories, but they are so far behind the curve that reading is a chore for them.
My students attend an inner-city high school in a high poverty area, and recent testing has shown that they all read below grade-level--many of them far below.
They are working hard to raise their reading levels through daily independent reading, but they struggle with most of the books in our classroom library. My students want not only to be able to complete their grade-level work; they want to be competitive when applying to college and for jobs.
My Project
My students have a brand-new Literacy Lounge (thank you, DonorsChoose!) and are excited to enjoy their independent reading time on their new beanbag chairs, but few of the materials in our classroom library are of an appropriate level for their current abilities. They are committed to reading daily in order to rise several grade-levels by the end of the year, so I would like to get them some high-interest books, more appropriate to their current reading levels. Daily reading time using high-interest student-selected materials will give them the motivation they need to keep trying to read and work to get to where they want to go.
My kids are good kids who want to be successful in school and in life, but they have not had all of the resources they have needed to be where they should be at this point in high school, much less to be competitive when applying to college in the next year or two.
I want to help them catch up to the kids against whom they will be completing for college entrance and for jobs so that they can reach their dreams.
