Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come to the resource room for extra support in reading, math, and writing. We only have a small time together so we make every moment count! We spend a lot of time learning how to decode but due to lack of resources we don't spend much time engrossed in a good book; which is what we need
My students live in a highly impoverished area.
They do not have adequate learning materials or books at home. Most students enter kindergarten without ever having been read to. The student's in my resource classroom are not only disadvantaged economically, but they also have been found eligible for special education services due to a deficit in reading, math, writing, or language skills.
My students are highly motivated to learn about the world but have a lack of exposure. Our school has a wonderful staff with wonderful teachers who try their best to enhance the learning of each individual student. We are an AVID school, which means we believe each and everyone one of our students can and will attend college.
My Project
My students will use the requested materials to enhance reading comprehension. My students have struggled with reading due to reading disabilities. I want my students to find a love for reading through high interest stories such as Flat Stanley, Freckle Juice, and Judy Moody. As a small group in the resource room we will participate in book studies as we read these enjoyable books.
The informational texts are also high interest articles that will allow students to practice comprehension daily and learn something new about our world.
I want my students to find a joy and passion for reading.
Just as they tell me each day how much they like to watch ____ movie, I want them to be more excited about reading books. Not just in the classroom but also at home. I want these students to be excited about reading and share that excitement with their parents and siblings at home. They do not have anyone at home that will read to them of discuss literature. My hope is that by having a mini book club, my students will love to read.
