I teach a multi-ability 3rd-grade full inclusion classroom. Students are from a diverse military background. We serve Schriever Air force Base in Colorado as well as a rural community outside of Colorado Springs.
Many of the students have already been enrolled in several schools due to their families permanent change of stationed (PCSd) to the base near us.
Being moved from school to school and home to home is a difficult transition. I strive to help my students create a sense of home and self to make their transitions easier.
My Project
These books are mentor texts I will use as a base for a lesson. Students will learn to make connections to books, learn to appreciate different genres, and use a variety of skills needed to understand and analyze reading. I use a combination of reading workshop and the school adopted reading program to meet student needs and differentiate student instruction.
The use of the mentor texts will assist in solidifying concepts often hard for beginning readers to understand.
Beginning readers benefit from hearing proficient readers read text aloud fluently. While reading I point out strategies to sound out words and think aloud for students to help their understanding.
