Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school, so my students encounter many challenges in their lives. Many of them are being raised by a single parent or grandparent. In some cases, both parents live in the same house, work two jobs, and the students still receive free lunch based on their socioeconomic status, preventing them from experiencing things that many of us consider "ordinary or common."
My fifth-grade students are gregarious, inquisitive, bilingual children from different countries with similar cultures in need of materials that will inspire academic excellence and help them reach their full potential.
Because they are from different countries and know what educational life can sometimes be, their conversations are usually about how they are grateful for being able to enjoy living in the United States. However, since Hurricane Harvey, many of those conversations have diminished. The effects have been lasting.
It is not possible for me to determine the direction their home life unfolds, but what I can do for them is try to provide a classroom in which they can feel safe to experience new things and reach new goals. My goal is to inspire them to academic excellence by reaching their full potential.
My Project
Balanced Literacy Approach requires a variety of books. All of my students will benefit from these books every day. They will be able to use these during independent reading and guided reading. Students will be able to build their comprehension skills, fluency, and vocabulary.
Using authentic literature in the classroom is an effective way to teach students the necessary skills needed to become strong readers.
Every day, students begin with an interactive read aloud and or shared reading. During this time, I am modeling the thought process. We use our context clues to determine the meaning of words. At the guided reading table, we focus on skills and key vocabulary words to help them understand the text. Students always read books throughout the day to meet their Accelerated Reading Goal at the end of each nine weeks. Your contribution will help them reach goals.
