Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students don't know this yet...but this year they are ready to read their first book in French! They will love the message of Le Petit Prince and it will fit perfectly into our year long theme on social justice and compassion for others.
This is a special class to me.
I have known these students since they were freshmen and this is their last year of French. We are a city school in Chicago Illinois where students are normally only offered 2 years of a language. My kids know they are fortunate to be in French 3 & they take it seriously. They have worked so hard and are the only French 3 honors class available this year!
I am prepared to challenge them with Le Petit Prince and I know they will walk around proud after reading it. This will be the first time I've gotten the chance to teach French 3 and I am lucky to be able to!
My Project
I have a blank canvas to work with in this class. I am in my 6th year of teaching and I'm ready for a challenge.
I am very passionate about teaching my students how to understand the world and themselves in it. We will be using French to explore social justice, environmental issues, world events and how to think and question!
I chose this famous book because it will give them that opportunity to think about inequalities, racism and intolerance throughout the themes in the book. For example, Le Petit Prince looks at the world through the lens of a young boy who sees it for what it is. Symbolism and vivid examples are given throughout that explore the dangers of being narrow-minded, how to discover ourselves and who we want to be and ultimately our universal obligation. A quote from the book says, "On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur. L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux." which translates to "The essential things in life are seen not with the eyes, but with the heart."-Le Petit Prince
Le Petit Prince will allow my students to have fun with it's imaginative story and whimsical illustrations yet seriously consider their role in society and what they want their legacy to be.
One of my favorite quotes represents my goals for this project and more globally in my teaching practice:
"Through learning language we learn culture.
Through learning culture we learn respect for others. Through learning respect for others, we can hope for peace." -Anonymous
