Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school services, an inner city and the students come from the immediate area. It is a large school of many languages and hundreds of sixth to eighth graders. The school is a wonderful example of America's diversity and inclusion.
My students need books and activities that support their interests in STEAM subjects that supplement their core classroom studies, and independent reading that can enhance their literacy skills.
My students are eager to come to the media center during lunch and homeroom. The students in our school love to read and explore new subjects, so our media center is a busy place. For many of our students, the school media center is the only place available to them to explore their interests with independent reading materials and STEAM activities. Bringing research sources and entertaining books, engaging STEAM products that encourage reading and project-based activities, that interest the students, will support their educational endeavors and independent reading enjoyment.
My Project
My project will provide students with book titles that they have been asking for. My students are eager to read titles that are of their own choice. Making appropriate reading decisions is key in creating readers that read for enjoyment.
Providing these contemporary titles, that have been requested by students, will encourage the middle schoolers to read independently for enjoyment.
Making their own choices, and enjoying what they read, will help improve their literacy skills, and reading frequency. Naturally, they will do more of what they enjoy, and the titles I hope to add to the Media Center collection are already student approved.
