This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a low-income/high poverty school district, where the students are constantly faced with challenges. We have a 100% rate for free or reduced-price lunch and breakfast. My students are creative, loving, and full of energy while having a thirst for knowledge.
My students love to learn and be engaged while being challenged and applying critical-thinking skills.
I have a great group of 15 students. Of those 15, I have six in speech services and six who receive extra services. In our classroom, we do our best to look after and help each other.
My Project
My students are an amazing group of kids that come from all walks of life. Many of them have already been in two or even three schools before they leave kindergarten. The students in my class also come from different cultures; some of the cultures are new to them even.
The kids in my class would love to be able to find more books and stories that feature their culture to allow them to relate to the characters.
My hope for this project is to build awareness of different cultures and to celebrate all the unique qualities of people. These books encourage reading about important people in the world and engage the students in learning about cultures besides their own.
