My Students

This year the first graders have made tremendous gains in their reading abilities. They have become active stakeholders in their learning! They are self-motivated to read and push themselves by choosing text that is on the high end of their AR independent reading level.

Our students' love of reading has created a need for more books in our classroom library!

We only have the opportunity to go to the library once a week. Our students are devouring books and borrow books from our classroom library a couple times a week.

We want to make sure we are providing books for all types of readers with a variety of topics and reading levels. Our goal is to fill our library with books for students who are ready for some tougher leveled text but also provide books for students who struggle. So often, our struggling readers are extremely limited when choosing books in their independent reading level.

Mrs. Meister and I have looked through our classroom libraries and have found these two areas to be the most lacking in choices for our students.

My Project

The books chosen were specifically chosen for independent reading levels of 0.5-1.2 and 2.2-3.6 independent reading levels. As we looked through our classroom libraries we found we were consistently trying to find books that met these independent reading levels.

Every child should have books that interest them, no matter what their reading level is!

I believe that if this project is funded it will help provide many learning opportunities for my students.

I chose Henry and Mudge, the Mercy Watson series, and the George and Martha books to extend higher level readers. Our high-leveled students are ready for chapter books and want the learning opportunity. I chose books like Puppy Mudge Takes a Bath to meet our struggling readers where they are at, but also provide text that is similar to what their peers are choosing.
