Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are as diverse as New York City in race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and ability. Our school demographics are sixty-two percent Hispanic, twenty-eight percent Black, five percent Asian and three percent White, with eighty-five percent of students receiving free or reduced-price lunches. My students come to school everyday from all five boroughs with various needs, persevering against all the challenges life has thrown at them.
I have students who come to school with so little and students coming to school without breakfast and without backpacks.
Some cannot live at home with their parents and some do not even have a place to call home. Our students deal with many challenges including mental health issues, gun violence and pregnancies. I want to be able to use my time with my students to provide them all with the educational opportunities they deserve.
My Project
No matter what disciple students want to pursue once they leave high school, a love of reading will always be something that students can take with them on their journey to adulthood. Whether they have a love of fiction or nonfiction, chapter books or graphic novels, a love of reading can transport students to new places and help them explore identities and places that they may not have thought about exploring on their own.
We want to continue to expand our classroom library to include as many different genres and types of books as possible, so all students can find something to enjoy.
To do this, I am selecting a number of titles that range from low to advanced reading levels so students can jump in at the level they are comfortable with. This includes a selection of science non-fiction books that encompass many topics, including climate change and genetics which are incredibly relevant today. We are also looking at incorporating many authors of color and highlighting protagonists who look like my students so they can see themselves in the books they read. We are trying to incorporate a number of different fiction genres including action, romance, mystery and science fiction, to engage as many students and as many interests as possible. With your help, it is my hope that soon there will be a book for every student in my classroom on the shelves.
