Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an English as Second Language (ESL) teacher at Martin Luther King High School in Manhattan where I teach students from countries such as Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Ecuador, and the Domincan Republic. My students are all low-income minorities and do not have many opportunities in life and in education. As a teacher, I want to engage my students and teach them a love for books. I personally believe that learning to love books and reading can change one's life and open many doors for them. Not only does literature broaden my students' horizons, but it introduces them to new themes and ideas that are worth considerable thought and exploration both in the classrom and beyond. With this set of classroom books, I want to engage the students in learning by reading stories that I loved as a child. I think that by captivating their interest in something that has universal themes, such as many of those presented in these books, my students learning experiences will be enhanced. As a teacher, I do not have any books for my ESL students. It is really difficult finding materials for my students and any help would be very much appreciated.
