Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten at a public school in Houston, Texas. Our school has a very diverse student population from all different backgrounds.
It is so important that students from all different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds come together as a family, and it is our job as educators to embrace diversity and promote cultural awareness and equality.
My students absolutely love to learn, and school is like a second home to them. Going to school and seeing their bright faces every morning is such a gift, and I always strive to make them feel like they are loved and welcome in my class.
My Project
My goal is to raise money not only for my own classroom, but all classrooms of our (PK-5) school. I would like to provide students with inclusive books displaying a diverse set of characters across a wide range of cultural backgrounds in order to embrace differences.
Books are so powerful, and I believe books are a great way to help promote a more racially sensitive and inclusive learning environment for students.
Like most public elementary schools, teachers often buy a lot of their own books and materials for their classroom. With this fundraiser, I hope to alleviate this financial barrier so that all teachers can have books that promote equality. In addition to providing a bundle of books for each classroom, I would also like to provide teachers with books to further educate themselves on ways to promote inclusion and embrace diversity in the classroom.
Racial identity and socioeconomic identity are learned as early as Pre-K. Teachers are in the unique position to influence students early on. Let's work together to give teachers and students the resources they need to spread equality and kindness to ALL. Let's create safe classroom spaces where ALL children feel welcome. Let's do it together!
