My students need copies of Bronx Masquerade for our unit on American Voices and narrative essays.

I teach kids in Birmingham Alabama. This once white school was integrated back in 1965 and now the students are predominately students of color. We have a complicated history at our school but our kids are incredible, smart and driven to succeed. On any given day you will see kids staying hours beyond the final bell to get tutoring, work ahead or pursue a passions for sports, music and theater.
My students are going to change the world.
I teach English and history and most of our work is focused on the idea of social change and activism. We make connections from history to current events and highlight the role individuals played in making change happen.
In English class, we focus on reading stories that are diverse and motivate students to be the change they want to see. Last year, my class motto was "We can change the world" and within a few months, my students had changed the motto to "We will change the world."
Thirty copies of Bronx Masquerade will allow my students to read these stories in class. Our unit on American Voices will be extended by reading the experiences people from all walks of life. Each chapter is a great example of a narrative essay attached with a poem. This will give students strong and varied examples as they read the book. At the end of our novel study students will write their own narrative essay and a poem.
I cannot wait for students to read stories from all walks of life and then write their own stories!
The opportunity to read different stories before writing their own is invaluable. Bronx Masquerade is an interesting book and fits perfectly with our first unit. Getting these books will allow us to start of the year right by reading a novel in the first 9 weeks!
