My students need poetry. They need poetry with language they can understand and people they can relate to. My cart includes 13 Young Adult Poetry books.
Every year, I get so excited for National Poetry month (April)! I want poetry to be meaningful, fun, and exciting for my middle and high school students. As a teacher this is hard when I work in a school with no library and have to come up with my own books for my classroom library.
I teach 8th, 9th, and 12th grade Literature in a 6-12 charter school.
The students are respectful and well-behaved. Currently they take good care of the books in my classroom library. The students will be incredibly appreciative of and kind to new books.
My Project
I challenge my students to read 20 books in one semester. During National Poetry Month (April), I ask my students to read 4 books of poetry. This is difficult when the school does not have a library from which to choose poetry. We will be reading poetry as a class and individually.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote "How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways". I love poetry. I love teaching poetry. My students are just learning to love poetry. Please join my class in sharing a love of poetry.
