Thailand, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Somalia, Tanzania, Eritrea, Syria, and Kenya. These are only some of my students' home countries. My students have travelled thousands of miles from their home countries, leaving everything they know behind to come to their new country.
They are eager for the opportunity to learn and thrive in their new home.
Many have never been to school before or have had interrupted schooling, so they are learning to read, write, and count for the first time. They are also learning to read and write in English, which they are very excited about. They love learning new words and speaking with me in English.
Despite language and cultural barriers, my students are making friends and learning so much every day. They continually surprise me with their kindness, joyfulness, and determination. While teaching can be stressful and exhausting, I look forward to each day because I know that it will be full of surprises and smiles from my students.
My Project
My students come from diverse countries with little to no English. They work very hard to build their English skills as well as basic reading skills. These book series will help my students practice basic phonics skills and gain confidence in their abilities to read English. These popular characters will also help keep my students engaged and motivated to read.
Without accessible and engaging texts, my students will not be able to develop their reading skills.
By using these books, my students will continue to grow in their English literacy and build the foundation for a love of reading that they can take with them into future school years.
