My students need these books to expand their understanding of the world. These books will expose them to new cultures and experiences that they wouldn't be able to access on their own.
I teach in a Title 1 School District in Kodiak, Alaska. Alaska is known for its beauty and jaw dropping landscapes. But we are also far from stores, museums, theaters and many other experiences children living in a big city might experience.
My students come from many diverse backgrounds.
In Kodiak you will find students from many different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Each one of them brings something special to our classroom. But one thing that is the same is their love for learning and experiencing new things. In kindergarten I feel like I am exceptionally lucky because they have just started the amazing journey of learning in a classroom. My five year olds especially love hands on learning and experimenting with anything new and exciting. Each day my students actively engage with their peers and their classroom. When I am able to keep the materials fresh and exciting their learning skyrockets.
My Project
Your donation to this project will help my students have access to a diverse set of mentor texts. Each week we will focus on a different theme inspired by Tara West's literacy program. She has scoured the world to find only the best books to compliment her program. Books that are inspirational and life changing.
With your support I will use these books to guide my students to become close listeners, to learn how to ask questions about words they don't understand and to then write about their own experiences.
These are the skills they will need to become stronger reader. They will not only learn to read the texts but comprehend what the authors message was or learn about the world around us. Going along with the beautiful mentor texts we will create art projects and fun crafts and experiences to enhance and create a whole brain experience. Through my guidence this year in kindergarten I hope to inspire my students to not only read books but to experience them.
