The challenge facing my male students is simply getting them to be comfortable, confident, and excited about reading independently during class. They currently have a hard time finding books in the classroom library that they are interested in reading.
I have a gender-based classroom of 22, 3rd grade, boys; 19 African-American, 2 Hispanic, and 1 Asian.
The school year just began, but I can already tell that they are all intelligent, and very energetic. They like to read, though some of them aren't comfortable reading aloud. I'm a first year teacher, so I only had a few books to add to the classroom library in which they found interesting. They all try to read those same few books, but there isn't enough for everyone. There are other books in the classroom library that the previous teacher left behind, but they don't seem to be of much interest to my group of male students. My students attend a Title 1 school in Missouri.
Third grade is a very important year for students, academically and socially. The books that I picked are from a list of authors, titles, and subjects in which my boys told me they are interested in reading. Providing them with a wide range of books on their reading, and interest level, could change how they feel about reading, for the better. I will be able to group them according to reading/interest levels to read in small groups, I would be able to work one-on-one with other students while they are engaged in a book they enjoy, and I can help them all become great readers. My students will learn to read fluently, comprehend what they read, and realize that reading is not a punishment, but an enjoyable thing to do.
This project is very important.
I have a classroom of 22 boys, on different reading levels, who need to be equipped with books within their interest, that will make them excited and confident about reading. This could make a difference between them hating to read or loving to read, not only in the 3rd grade, but for the rest of their academic career, and life.Read More
