My 32 fourth grade bobcats engage in collaborative learning daily, and feed off of a hands-on, high-energy, and an engaging learning environment. Fourth Grade is a year of not only academic growth, but of exploring your passion and interests. I teach fourth grade in Montgomery County, Maryland. Our small neighborhood school is located just three miles from Washington, D.C. This year, my class is composed of a majority of ESOL, IEP, 504, and emotional needs students. Each child enters the classroom each morning with a smile on their face and ready to learn something new. My students deserve learning opportunities that expose them to the wonderful world of literature and the magic that books contain!
My Project
I am a strong believer in putting new, exciting, and engaging texts in the hands of students in order to instill a love of reading. Currently, my school's book room is outdated and covered with a film of dust that needs to be blown off before selecting titles for students to read. I would love to create a fresh new look on reading, and to get my students excited about books.
I dream of creating book clubs in my classroom, in which students can engage in rich literature discussions, while deepening their love of reading in a text of THEIR CHOICE!
So much of what children read in school is dictated by their reading level and curriculum. However, in my eyes, students are so much more than a number! I firmly believe that students should have the opportunity to read "outside of their reading level" in a text that truly calls to them and excites them. Exposing students to rigorous texts helps to elevate student reading comprehension and application of reading skills and strategies. By creating student-selected book clubs, all students in my classroom would have the opportunity to expand their interests of books and to go on a journey through the pages of a book!
