My Project

Although 94% of our students come from marginalized backgrounds, recent legislation has severely limited their ability to access information about their own heritage and history in the classroom. The school library is the perfect place for our students to gain exposure to Black authors, illustrators, narrators, and more. I am requesting picture books and young adult titles that feature protagonist of color. These titles will be available to anyone who chooses to read them; but, students will neither be graded, nor will they be required to read any book that makes them feel uncomfortable. These materials will make a difference in students' learning because they will return to class refreshed and ready to learn. What's more, they will return to class knowing that they are accepted and appreciated at our school.

“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” ~James Baldwin

We hope that, through these materials, students can start conversations about their identities that go well beyond the month of February. The ultimate goal of this project is for our students from under-represented populations to feel seen, heard, valued, and safe.
